CLARKS SUMMIT — After a two-year hiatus, the Forever Young Kids’ Fishing Derby will return to reel in fun on Saturday, June 18, at 9 a.m.. Children from ages 2 to 15 will get to fish at Eston Wilson Lake for awards, prizes, and most importantly, fun.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for kids to come and fish,” said Sarah Cremer, chairperson of the derby. “It’s a really nice community event.”
Awards and prizes will be awarded for the largest fish caught in each of the three age groups. The Catch of the Day Award will be given to the biggest fish overall. The fish will be measured by Bob Kester and Tommy Kriedler.
It is a free event. Bait will be provided. The children will get to enjoy a free lunch of chips and hot dogs cooked by the Waverly Masonic Lodge #301.
This event was started by founding chairperson Linda Young. She created this fishing derby in memory of her late husband Lawrence “Bud” Young, who was the owner of the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home.
A committee of volunteers, the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board, and many sponsors helped make the derby return. The premier sponsors include Eagle Cleaners, Sicklers Bikes, and Servant Church of the Abingtons, who donated at least $1000 each. Other sponsors include S2W Contracting. Dalton Do It Center, McGraths, Citizens Savings Bank, Quality Collision, Abington Civic League, AAJRB, Farmers Insurance-Fenton Agency, Peoples Security Bank and Trust, Scranton Label, SWBC Mortgage, and Bluestone Realty Group.
At least 220 children have currently registered to the derby. The registration process is online. Children who just show up that day without registration will still be welcomed.
“The AAJRB is happy to bring the fishing derby back, which has been a great success in our community,” said Cremer.
In addition to cash sponsorship, the Forever Young Kids’ Fishing Derby committee be pleased to receive baskets for its raffle. These monies will go toward Hillside Parks improvements. Your donation is tax-deductible and the committee can provide a tax EIN with a receipt upon request.
$1000 Premier Sponsor will receive special media and in-park coverage before and after the event; name on the t-shirt front.
$500 GRAND SPONSOR will receive special media and in park coverage; name on t-shirt back.
$250 SPONSOR will receive in park coverage; name on t-shirt back.
$100 DONORS will receive recognition in the park.
