The dark days of the winter are turning into bright, sunshiny days at the Dietrich Theater.

We have a stunning new art exhibit, thanks to Patrick Robinson and the Kitson Arts Alliance, including paintings, mixed media, sculptures, and more. Come to our Earnshaw Gallery and let the sun shine in as you browse all kinds of expressions of the wonder and beauty of nature.

Erica and Ronnie are walking around with bright expressions of their faces because more new movies are being released. Coming up soon will be showings of a new Tom and Jerry movie, Mortal Kombat, Raya and the Lost Dragon.

“And the release dates seem to be sticking,” Erica says, hopefully.

She also is encouraged that patrons are starting to return, some for the first time. New York movies are opening for the first time on March 5, a really good sign. Even more exciting is that the Dietrich Theater is announcing that the Spring Film Festival is scheduled from April 23 to May 13. All of this good news is so welcoming in this year that happens to be the 20th Anniversary of the Dietrich Theater!

As I write this, our latest one-week Mini Fest is coming to an end. I am so glad that I got to see “Herself,” a story of all of the support that is needed for the young mother of two young children, to free herself from an abusive husband. It is a beautiful story of building her strength as she actually builds a home, with the help of so many. A very special movie, I think. I will see “She Is the Ocean” today, another story of what women can accomplish, nine women dedicated to the field of oceanology.

Dr. Mary Murphy Fox has been helping many of us get through the dark days. She has added another Gel Pen Experience series of classes on ZOOM on Mondays, March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. These classes allow you to enhance the calming effects of creating doodles and designs with a gel pen. To register for her classes call the Dietrich at 570-836-1022 ext. 3.

For the 5-12 year olds in your family, Drawing, Painting and Printmaking may be the perfect way to end the winter stay-at-home blues. Steve Colley invites your young ones to come to the Sheldon Studio on Fridays, March 19 through April 9, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to explore a variety of mediums and techniques, including pencil, pastel, charcoal, mono- prints, blockprinting and gyotaku. Call the number above to register.

It is not too late to read Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea.” If you miss the discussion on Wednesday, March 3, on Zoom, you can see the film of the same name with Spencer Tracy the following Wednesday, March 10, at 1 or 7 p.m., two free showings. If you did not appreciate the book when it was assigned in high school, consider reading it again. It is much more meaningful as we age. I was blown away by its beauty and relevance as I recently reread it.

Finally, I need to tell you about our Dietrich Decorative Painters. I just visited the class that meets on three Wednesdays a month beginning at noon, taught by Teresa Brewer. Kathy Kovalchik has retired and now has time to do something she loves. She and Linda Kerstetter are longtime students in Teresa’s classes, learning all the principles of decorative painting. They all welcome new students to the class, so if you would like to join them, call the Dietrich at the number above.

The temperature is climbing toward 50 degrees as I write this. The snow is melting, the icicles are disappearing, the sun is shining, and the Dietrich is poised to celebrate its 20th year in historic downtown Tunkhannock. Let’s make it our best year yet! We can do that. All we need is for you to be there with us.
