South Abington Park attracts both local residents and non-residents to an oasis filled with lush greenery, plant life, Leggetts Creek that flows through it with covered bridges and a walking path, making it an attraction for all nature lovers.

South Abington Park has been voted Best Park in the Best of the Abingtons Readers’ Contest sponsored by the Abington Journal, a publication of the Times Leader Media Group.

Located at 642 Northern Blvd., next to the South Abington Elementary School in South Abington Twp., the park offers much more than beautiful grounds; it has a children’s playground, basketball courts, softball and soccer fields. On hot summer days, the splash pad is a hit with children.

The park has a picnic pavilion equipped with park tables on a first-come/first-served basis for those interested in enjoying an outdoor lunch or dinner. Restrooms are handicapped accessible.

During school hours, parents of young children, like Amber Morrow, can be seen taking advantage of the park’s amenities.

The Mt. Cobb resident frequently takes her family on the 25-minute drive to enjoy the park, including the picnic pavilion where they recently took advantage of a warm spring day.

Morrow had discovered the park on the county website after moving here from Allentown three years ago.

“We like the walking path, for sure. You can see the waterfall at the end; they love that, the covered bridge, really everything and especially the splash pad,” she said.

The park is a favorite destination for animal lovers where “doggie bags” from the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center are complimentary.

Matt Evans has enjoyed taking his dog to the park daily since moving to Clarks Green in October 2018.

“It’s kept clean (the park); it always looks nice and everyone is friendly,” he said. “The really do keep it clean and the environment is good and feels a little bit more safe then some of the other places.”

A local sewer authority employee, Evans, 30, enjoys taking photos of the park scenery.

“I walk to the walking path all the time and, to be honest, I take a lot of pictures of the trees and wildlife,” he admits.

The park has been known to host flea markets and car shows throughout the year and, during holiday seasons, it is decorated accordingly, making it a pleasure to visit.

Park rules are posted all around the park where there is a zero tolerance for alcohol.

Hours of operation are from dawn to 11 p.m.
