Ethan Horutz from Abington Heights finished first in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional when District 2 conducted the diving portion of its Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 25 at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre.

Horutz led the way as the Comets took three of the top four spots out of seven entries.

James Reese, the 2022 champion, finished third behind Dominick Horning from Williamsport of District 4, making him the second-best from within the district. He posted a score of 221.45.

James Brust was fourth with a score of 162.05.

The strong diving performance gives Abington Heights 39 points, ahead of Williamsport’s 23 and Delaware Valley’s 16 going into the swimming events which are scheduled for March 3-4 at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.

Veronica Matthies from Abington Heights finished fourth out of 10 divers in Class 3A girls, which is also a subregional event with District 4.

Both the Abington Heights boys and Scranton Prep girls are potential contenders.

Abington Heights finished second in the Lackawanna League boys standings at 7-1. Scranton Prep was 4-4.

The Scranton Prep girls won the Lackawanna League title with an 8-0 record. Abington Heights went 5-0.

Les Richards Championships

Scranton Prep won eight of 12 girls events and six of 12 boys events when teams began working their way toward the postseason by testing themselves in the Les Richards Championships at Scranton High School.

Ava Forgione and Tessa Mangan each won two individual and two relay events.

Abington Heights won three boys events. Horutz was joined by Jason Casper, who won the 200-yard freestyle, and Derek Williams, who won the 50 freestyle.

Brothers Lukas and Alex Iannone each won two individual events and a relay for Scranton Prep.
