PECKVILLE — Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Prep players played major roles in keeping the City competitive into the fourth quarter before falling to the County 41-17 in the 91st annual Scranton Lions Club Dream Game July 23 at John Henzes/Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Lackawanna Trail’s Demitrius Douglas was the game’s leading rusher.
Brady Holmes was the City’s top receiver and scorer while Scranton Prep teammate Reese Tanner led all players in tackles.
The Lions and Cavaliers combined to account for nine of the 22 City starters.
Lackawanna Trail’s Douglas, Max Kimmel, Brian Gow and Logan Edwards were all part of the City team.
Douglas started at running back and, in a game where the rest of the City runners combined to average just 1.1 yard per carry, ran for 31 yards on nine attempts. He also made a tackle.
Kimmel, who is headed to Thaddeus Stevens Tech, started in the secondary. He intercepted a pass, made two tackles and also contributed on offense with a 10-yard catch.
Gow, who is headed to Misericordia to continue his academic and athletic careers, started at right guard on offense.
Edwards came off the bench at linebacker and made two tackles while assisting on two others.
Scranton Prep was represented by Holmes, Tanner, Ambrose Rossi, Treyvon Dickey, Jack Doughton, Travis Sharples and James Pappas.
Holmes had three catches for 107 yards, scoring the only two City touchdowns on 30- and 71-yard receptions.
Tanner started at linebacker and had a game-high seven tackles long with an assist.
Rossi was a two-way starter at tackle and defensive end. He made a tackle, assisted on six others and rushed the passer into an incompletion.
Dickey started on offense and was the other City receiver with three catches, which accounted for 13 yards. He also made a tackle on defense.
Doughton started at strong safety and made three tackles, including one for a five-yard loss.
Sharples started at defensive tackle.
Pappas came off the bench and had a four-yard reception.
Quarterback Louis Paris, who continues to rehabilitate his knee after surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament, was selected for the City team, but was unable to play. He was with the City team at the game.
