Fall sports seasons are just getting started, but already District 2 is making progress on planning its championship events.
Those plans, for most sports, have been announced through the district’s website.
Girls golf will get things started with team championships Sept. 23 at Honesdale Golf Club. The individual tournament for boys and girls will be Sept. 29 at Fox Hill Country Club and the boys team tournament is set for Oct. 6 at Elkview Country Club.
In Class 3A, where Abington Heights competes, the top five boys and top three girls will advance to the state tournament. Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Prep are part of Class 2A where the top six boys and top three girls advance. The girls team champions will head into subregional play if they have three-player, 18-hole scores of 300 or better.
The girls tennis competition will begin with the team tournament, scheduled to start with quarterfinals Oct. 3 unless nine or more teams have .500 or better records in a classification at which point a preliminary round will be held Oct. 1.
The semifinals and finals are Oct. 7 at Kirby Park.
Singles play is set for Oct. 10 and 13 with doubles scheduled for Oct. 16 and 17.
Abington Heights is in Class 3A and Scranton Prep is in Class 2A.
In girls volleyball, the Class 3A tournament is planned for Oct. 24, 28 and 30. If a preliminary round is needed, it will be Oct. 22. Abington Heights competes in Class 3A.
Class A has two rounds Oct. 27 and 29. Lackawanna Trail is a Class A team.
In football, Abington Heights joins Delaware Valley, Pittston Area, West Scranton and Wyoming Valley West among the five teams trying to qualify for four spots in Class 5A.
The semifinals will be played Oct. 31 or Nov. 1 with the final set for Nov. 7 or 8.
Scranton Prep is among 10 teams in Class 3A where three rounds will be played and the playoffs will extend to the weekend of Nov. 14-15.
Berwick, Carbondale, Hanover Area, Lake-Lehman, Mid Valley, Montrose, Tunkhannock, Western Wayne and Wyoming Area are the other Class 3A teams.
Lackawanna Trail is part of a six-team District 2-11 Class A subregional where the top four are part of a playoff with semifinals Oct. 31-Nov. 1 and finals Nov. 7 or 8.
Holy Cross and Old Forge are the District 2 teams while Marian Catholic Pottsville Nativity and Tri-Valley are the District 11 teams.
Cross country, field hockey and soccer plans have not been announced yet.
