Scranton Prep and Abington Heights finished first and second in Lackawanna League Division 1 golf, landing both teams the top seeds for the league playoffs.

The unbeaten Cavaliers were the only Class 2A team playing in Division 1. The defending state champions went 12-0 in the league before competing for a berth in the District 2 Team Championships in Class 2A.

Scranton Prep won two playoff matches to reach the league’s Class 2A final against Division 2 co-champion Riverside. A win in that match would send the Cavaliers into the Oct. 6 championship match against Lake-Lehman at Elkview Country Club.

Brendan Bell led the Cavaliers in the first two rounds of the playoffs. He shot 36 in a 150-209, quarterfinal victory over Holy Cross then repeated that score while matching teammates Ben Boyanoski and Jack Pavuk for medalist in a 145-175, semifinal victory over Western Wayne.

Scranton Prep’s unbeaten regular season was highlighted by a 5-under-par team score during a 139-145 victory over Abington Heights Sept. 4 at Glen Oak Country Club to complete a season sweep of the rivalry.

Bell birded five of nine holes to shoot 32. Cole Powell broke par with a 35 while Boyanoski and Bobby Stott matched it with 36s.

Connor O’Malley-Kalinoski shot 35 to lead Abington Heights, which got 36s from Phillip Matthews and Seamus Kelley.

Abington Heights went 10-2 in the division.

The Comets were scheduled to face Wallenpaupack Sept. 30 in the Class 3A league semifinals to try to earn a match with Delaware Valley in the league final. The league winner will face Pittston Area for the district team title at Elkview.

Lackawanna Trail went 11-4 to finish fourth out of 16 teams in Lackawanna Division 2.

The Lions fell to Western Wayne 140-148 in the league’s Class 2A quarterfinals.
