EXETER — Brianna Moffatt led Abington Heights to a District 2 team golf championship, then claimed an individual title for herself.
Moffatt shot an 88 to finish second in a 16-player field Sept. 29 at Fox Hill Country Club in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional Individual Championships.
The junior claimed one of three available state tournament berths in the subregion and, because the only player to beat her was Kaylie Schall from Jersey Shore in District 4, Moffatt is the District 2 champion.
Schall shot an 86.
North Pocono’s Lyla Jones grabbed the third state spot with an 89.
Moffatt recovered well from trouble and bounced back from bad holes with birdies on the par 3, 13th and the par 4 second.
“Definitely a few punchouts out of spots that I really should not have been and others that helped me out were a few key birdie putts that saved me a little bit,” Moffatt said.
Liz George from Abington Heights tied for fifth with a 91 and Liz Peters tied for eighth with a 94.
Holy Redeemer’s Arden Brunn, a four-time state qualifier, won her first district title in Class 2A with a 78.
Tunkhannock’s Madison Walker, with an 86, and Montrose’s Ally Legg, with a 96, were the other state qualifiers.
Leah Skudalski from Scranton Prep was fourth out of 12 players with a 98. Teammate Sophia Galko shot 104 and was ninth.
Team championships
Moffatt shot a team-best 84 Sept. 23 at Honesdale Golf Club to lead Abington Heights to the District 2 Class 3A team title 257-262 over North Pocono.
Hazleton Area was third with a 269.
North Pocono had the tournament’s two best scores, but Abington Heights had better balance.
Liz George shot 86 and Kate Peters 87 to complete the three-player team score.
Walker’s 82 led Tunkhannock to the Class 2A title.
The Lady Tigers shot 274 to beat out second-place Elk Lake by five strokes and third-place Scranton Prep by six in the seven-team field.
Maeve Haggerty led Scranton Prep with a 90. Galko shot 91 and Skudalski 99.
