SCRANTON — Seniors Got Talent is typically the one handing out awards, but this year the show is also on the receiving end. The annual fundraiser, presented by United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC), has been recognized as runner-up in the fundraising category for the 2018 National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) Programs of Excellence, sponsored by the National Council on Aging.
“We were one of the two winners named in this category out of 80 applicants nationwide, so this is a real thrill,” said Laurie Fleming, director of Active Older Adult Programs at UNC.
Each year, the NISC honors outstanding efforts made by senior centers across the nation that offer innovative, creative, and replicable programs for older adults. UNC operates four Active Older Adult Centers throughout Lackawanna County, providing nutritious meals, screenings, fitness classes, and educational activities that encourage active, healthy and independent lifestyles. Proceeds from Seniors Got Talent benefit these important programs and services.
This year’s show will take place on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. at the Peoples Security Bank Theater at Lackawanna College. Contestants age 55 and older will compete for cash prizes and an Audience Choice Award. Celebrity judges include Stacey Lange, of WNEP-TV; Justin Sochovka, of QVC; and Frankie Warren, of Magic 93. The second half of the show will feature a local professional group performing acts from the musical “Nunsense.”
“It all started seven years ago as a fun way to showcase the talents of the participants at our senior centers,” Fleming explained. We had no idea it would end up being standing room only.” The show has since outgrown the centers and entertains an audience of more than 400.
Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. To purchase tickets, call 570-346-0759, ext. 114 or go to www.uncnepa.org.
