The Scranton Prep team of Alyssa Wigley and Lily Lengyel took the eventual state champions into three sets in the quarterfinals before being eliminated from the Class 2A doubles bracket of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Tennis Championships Nov. 4 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
Wigley and Lengyel, who helped the Classics win a state team title a week earlier, won a first-round match before battling with Hannah Kideckel-Rebecca Kideckel of Lower Moreland.
The Kideckels went on to post a 6-0, 6-0 win in the state championship match and had dropped just one game in the first round.
Against Wigley-Lengyel, however, they had to work through a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 marathon.
Wigley-Lengyel won their first-round match 6-2, 6-1 over Ella Knox-Baileigh Stetter from Delone Catholic.
Wyoming Seminary’s Ilana Rosenthal gave District 2 another state girls tennis championship by repeating her Class 2A doubles title with four wins Nov. 4-5.
Both District 2 champions from Abington Heights were defeated in the first round in Class 3A.
Lexi Lakatosh from Red Lion downed Susan Arp in singles 6-0, 6-1.
Haley Miller-Jade Miller from Manheim Township defeated Sona Hanumali-Mary Booth 6-0, 6-2 in doubles.
