Gianna Vachino and freshman Hadley Pallman led the way Feb. 28 and March 1 when the Abington Heights girls finished second in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional Swimming Championships at Wilkes-Barre Area.

The Comets finished behind only Williamsport, District 4’s only Class 3A school, and therefore earned recognition as the District 2 champion.

Vachino and Pallman each earned individual gold and silver medals as well as being part of first- and second-place relays.

Vachino’s win came in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.62 seconds. She was second in the 50 freestyle.

Pallman won the 200 freestyle by more than 2½ seconds with a time of 2:01.32. She was second in the 500 freestyle.

Kacey Johnson and Audra Wimmer joined Vachino and Pallman in the freestyle relays where they combined to win the 400 and place second in the 200.

Kaitlyn Giermanski, another freshman, won the 50 freestyle in 26.39 seconds and was second in 58.02. She was on the fourth-place 200 medley relay team with Ella Bannon, Elisa Brown and Carmen Palomares Giner.

Johnson took fifth in the 200 individual medley and sixth in the 500 freestyle.

The top six in each event earned medals while the top 12 scored points for the team.

Wimmer was fifth in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 freestyle.

Bannon, in the 100 breaststroke, and Brown, in the 200 IM, were sixth.

Sydney Moyle placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke.

Williamsport won with 341 points.

Abington Heights beat Delaware Valley 221-207 for second overall and the top spot from District 2.
