Sophomore Riley Borruso’s 133-pound title at the season-opening Battle on the Delaware highlighted a challenging first month of the season for the Lackawanna Trail wrestling team.
Both Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Prep finished December with 3-6 overall dual records, then returned to action Jan. 2 at the South Williamsport Mountaineers Invitational.
Lackawanna Trail
Borruso pinned Western Wayne’s R.J. Walter in the championship match at Delaware Valley.
Along with third-place finishes in the Frank Wadas Memorial at Tunkhannock and the South Williamsport event, Borruso has a team-best 20-5 record.
Matthew Shafer finished second at all three invitational tournaments and is 15-7, wrestling at 121 pounds at Delaware Valley before moving to 114 pounds.
Freshman Cidney Schaffer is 16-8, including a third-place finish at 107 at South Williamsport.
Joshua Fuller is 15-10, including a third-place finish at Tunkhannock and fourth at Delaware Valley, both at 139 pounds.
Joseph Thomas was fourth at Delaware Valley and fifth at South Williamsport at 127.
The Lions won their first three duals, including the opener of the Dec. 13 Hughesville Spartan Duals. They lost the remaining five that day and fell at Valley View, 36-31, in the Lackawanna League Division 2 opener.
Lackawanna Trail was the last of seven teams in the Battle on the Delaware, the 12th of 16 teams in the Wadas Memorial, and the eighth of 13 teams at South Williamsport.
Scranton Prep
The Cavaliers had two of their three wins, including a 48-12 victory in the Lackawanna Division 3 opener against Elk Lake.
The highlight of the league opening win was a first-period pin by Sane Subba at 139.
Scranton Prep also beat Elk Lake for its only win while going 1-5 in the Gary Woodruff Duals at Wyalusing Valley.
The Cavaliers tied for last out of 13 teams at South Williamsport after finishing 11th of 13 teams in the Tony Iasiello Christmas City Tournament in Bethlehem.
Jake Barrett leads the team with a 14-7 record, twice as many as the next-highest total on the team.
Barrett was second at South Williamsport and sixth at Bethlehem at 139. Joseph Whelan was sixth at 145 in both tournaments.
