The Abington Heights junior high softball team finished the season with a 14-1 overall record, including a 9-1 mark in league play, to win the Lackawanna League Division I championship.

During a 17-8 win over West Scranton May 3, Megan Heard and Bailey White both tripled and had two hits. Hayley Kane and Breonna Pollack chipped in with two hits, and Haddy Davis and Macey Tuffy contributed with RBIs. Ava Leach, Pollack and Avery Fiorillo combined to strike out 12.

White had a home run and double to help the team defeat South Scranton, 20-3, in one game of a doubleheader May 4. Fiorillo had two hits, including a triple, Colleen Cole tripled, Tuffy doubled, and Kane chipped in with two hits. Brynn Hughes stole two bases and Riley Dempsey led the defensive effort. Tawni Coronel and Fiorillo combined on a two-hitter while striking out seven.

White came through with three hits, including two home runs, during the team’s 23-0 win over South Scranton in the second game of a doubleheader May 4. Leach, Davis and Dempsey had two hits, and Kane doubled. Leach, Pollack and Coronel combined to throw a no-hitter in three innings.

Davis delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly to help the Lady Comets clinch the division championship with a 7-6 win over the Northeast Intermediate School in the first game of a doubleheader May 10. White had three hits, Fiorillo added two triples and Dempsey had two hits. Leach struck out nine to remain undefeated on the mound.

The Lady Comets suffered their first loss of the season, 5-3, to Northeast in the second game of the doubleheader May 10. Leach had three hits, including a double, Dempsey doubled, and Debbie Shurtleff, Meghan Van Wert, and Cole chipped in with singles. Fiorillo pitched a six-hitter with five strikeouts.

Heard had three hits to help the Lady Comets top Valley View, 5-2, May 11. Fiorillo doubled and Margrette Phillips and Haley Callahan had hits for Abington.

Fiorillo walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Lady Comets to a 3-2 win over North Pocono May 15. Dempsey had three hits, including a triple, Davis had two hits, Van Wert ripped a double, and Shurtleff added a single. Fiorillo tossed a four-hitter and struck out eight.
