The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is organizing a fundraiser event called “Undaunted” to not only collect donations for WRC but to raise awareness of domestic abuse and empower people who have suffered or are suffering from abuse. The event will involve raffle baskets, a photo story, painting, interactive art and much more.
“I named the event ‘Undaunted’ because I think it is important for people in abusive situations or leaving one to know that they are being courageous, even though it seldom feels that way,” said Rachel Walter, photographer in the fundraising event and an organizer.
The raffle baskets will be available Feb. 25 through March 3 at Cooper’s Seafood House, 701 N. Washington Ave. in Scranton, a week leading up to the event. The actual fundraiser event will take place on March 4 at The Bog, 341 Adams Ave. in Scranton.
Furthermore, the art will be available for viewing at 4 p.m. when The Bog opens and music by DJ duo SaturBae (Jessica McGuigan and Patrice Wilding) from 10 p.m to 1 a.m. The artwork will remain available for viewing at The Bog through the month of March.
“Organizing the fundraiser has been a unique experience,” said Walter. “It is a personal topic for me, which has caused me to have some mixed emotions. However, it is really refreshing to see how eager people are to help and the generosity of local businesses donating items and services.”
Aside from helping to organize this fundraiser, Walter also created a domestic abuse photo story, which will be on display at The Bog. Allison LaRussa is another one of the featured artists in the fundraiser event.
LaRussa constructed paintings, which pertain to the theme of fundraiser as well. The WRC will also have an advocate present, informational paperwork and statistics paired with the art.
“The WRC helped me in the past when I was in a situation and didn’t know what to do,” said Walter. “It’s easy to feel like you’ve lost the power or control in your life and that’s not true, you can take it back. The WRC exists to help do that and did that for me. I like to think organizing this fundraiser is an opportunity for me to give back in some way to an organization that helped me when I needed it.”
