Andrew Kettel resigned his position as Scranton Prep boys basketball coach after leading the Cavaliers to their eighth District 2 title in his 10 years there.
Kettel released a statement March 30 after submitting his resignation.
“When I was hired to be Scranton Prep’s boys basketball coach 10 years ago, my goals were to enhance the proud tradition of Scranton Prep basketball and to positively affect the lives of the young men who I would have the privilege to coach,” Kettel wrote in the statement. “Since these goals have been achieved, it is time for me to turn the page and begin a new chapter in my life.”
The Cavaliers, who averaged 20 wins per season under Kettel, put together a postseason run after finishing tied for third in Lackawanna League Division 1 where all five member schools reached the state tournament.
Scranton Prep won the District 2 title and a first-round Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 4A state tournament game before losing in the second round against Bishop Shanahan.
The Cavaliers won seven straight District 2 titles before falling short last season and have reached the state tournament for nine straight seasons. They finished 7-6 in the league and 17-10 overall this season.
“I would like to thank our coaching staff, trainers, student managers, current players, and the young men who played for us over the past 10 years, for your hard work, sacrifice, belief, trust, and dedication toward achieving our common goals,” Kettel said in the statement. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together both on and off the court. I am most proud of the successful and truly good young men that you have become and will be eternally grateful for the honor of having been your coach.”
Kettel, a Clarks Green resident, began his head coaching career at Lackawanna Trail. He leads the local Coaches vs. Cancer initiative, which has raised more than $3 million, bringing national attention and honors for its success.
