The Abington Heights boys volleyball season and District 2 Class 3A title defense came to an abrupt ending.

Playing in the May 24 Class 3A semifinals doubleheader at Delaware Valley, Abington Heights was upset by Wilkes-Barre Area in a three-set match.

Abington Heights entered the tournament as the second seed after a regular season in which it went 10-2 to place second behind unbeaten Blue Ridge in the Lackawanna League and went 14-2 overall.

The Comets opened their postseason by winning the first two sets from the third-seeded Wolfpack, which finished the season 9-7.

Abington Heights was unable to capture a third set and a return trip to the finals.

Wilkes-Barre Area came back to win three straight sets, including an extended fifth set when neither team could build a two-point lead by the time they reached 15 points.

Abington Heights had not allowed any team other than Blue Ridge to win more than a set before Wilkes-Barre Area won, 19-25, 11-25, 25-23, 25-18, 18-16.

The Comets had come into the postseason on a six-match winning streak.

Nico Bossi had 15 kills and four aces in the loss.

Eric Barbrack had 12 kills while Jack Burke had 11 to go along with nine digs and four aces.

Dane Johnson had a team-high 18 digs as well as seven kills.

James Brust had 44 assists and 13 digs.

Michael Cummins led in aces with five.

James Dadey had nine assists.

On the season, Brust was the team lead in assists, aces, blocks and digs. Burke led in kills.

Class 2A

Lackawanna Trail played an independent schedule this season and was unable to make the playoffs.

The Lions went 0-11, losing every match by a three-set sweep.
