The defense got stingier, an already productive passing game became more efficient and a complementary running game emerged for the Abington Heights football team.
With Mason Fedor leading the way, often on the receiving end of passes from sophomore quarterback Nick Bradley, the Comets doubled their win total from a year ago in the recently completed regular season and earned a playoff home game.
The Comets split their four games, all in Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1, during October, allowing just nine points during consecutive wins that assured a winning record. They ended the regular season 3-3 for fourth place out of seven teams in the division and 6-4 overall to finish second of six teams trying to land the four spots in the District 2 Class 5A playoffs.
As the second seed, Abington Heights will host Scranton, in a rematch of one of its October wins as well as of last year’s district semifinal playoff loss, when they open the playoffs Nov. 4. A win would put Abington Heights in the district final against the Delaware Valley-Pittston Area winner.
Fedor led the team in receiving, scoring, tackles, tackles for losses and interceptions. He caught 58 passes for 862 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense, he made 67 tackles, assisted on 17 more, had eight stops for losses and picked off five passes.
Bradley completed 60 percent of his throws while connecting for 1,801 yards and 19 touchdowns with eight interceptions. He also ran for 283 yards and four scores.
In addition to Fedor, Bradley moved the ball around with Gavin Anders, Kevin Schmidt, Cayd Sespico and Shawn Theodore all finishing in double figures in catches.
Anthony Curra ran for 358 yards and five touchdowns to lead a ground game that more than doubled last season’s contributions with 112 yards per game and 4.6 per carry.
Anders, another sophomore, was second on the team in tackles with 51, along with 22 assists and a team-high three fumble recoveries.
Austin Boersma led in assists and was fourth in tackles behind Dom Vergnetti.

Jackson Drake was in on nine tackles, while Sespico, Boersma and Fedor were in on eight. Sespico had the first hit on seven of those tackles.
Fedor scored the game’s only two touchdowns during the second quarter, catching a pass before his interception return.
