Scranton Prep’s struggles in the early stages of the 2024-25 boys basketball season carried over into the New Year and into league play.
Jayden Burrell’s 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left Jan. 2 lifted visiting Scranton to a 57-54 victory over the Cavaliers in a Lackawanna League Division 1 game.
The loss dropped the Cavaliers, Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state Class 4A semifinalists last season, to 1-1 in the division and 3-5 overall.
The Cavaliers won their league opener 64-57 at Delaware Valley Dec. 19 behind a 26-point performance from Brycen Martin, who hit five 3-pointers in the game.
The other wins came in a rout of Dunmore at the Lynett Tournament and a 47-46 victory at Bethlehem Liberty. The Cavaliers also lost to Dallas, Cardinal O’Hara, Pocono Mountain West and, in the Lynett Tournament, against Holy Cross.
Scranton Prep has lost by five points or less three times.
With a power ratings boost from what is statistically the toughest schedule in all of District 2, the Cavaliers still ranked fourth out of 12 teams through Jan. 2 in the race for eight spots in the District 2 Class 4A playoffs.
