Four players from Abington Heights and one from Lackawanna Trail shot 80 or better Friday when the fall high school sports season opened in Lackawanna County with the Jackman Memorial Boys’ Tournament at Scranton Municipal Golf Club.

Abington Heights posted a four-man team score of 310 to finish second in the 18-team field.

Andrew Kazmierczak from Lackawanna Trail shot a 77 to receive the award as second junior. After the individual title, the Jackman Tournament also has individual awards for the top two finishers from each class.

Billy Pabst Jr. from North Pocono won the overall title with a 3-under-par, 69.

M.J. Stivala from Scranton Prep also broke par, shooting 70 to lead the Cavaliers to the tournament title by 17 shots over Abington Heights, which had won the previous two tournaments.

The Comets edged Valley View by one stroke for second place.

Daniel Flickinger led Abington Heights, finishing fifth overall with a 74.

Andrew Kirtley from Abington Heights matched Kazmierczak in the tie for 11th with a 77.

Kazmierczak was 3-over after three holes, but coach Joel Nietz praised his mental adjustments to turn the round around and go just 2-over for the remaining 15 holes.

James Flickinger had a 79 and Michael Marion an 80 to complete the Abington Heights team score.

Lackawanna Trail finished in the top half of the field, placing ninth with a 366.

J.P. Gilroy shot a 90, Adam Jones a 94 and Josh Rzucidlo 105.

Lackawanna Trail 7, Mountain View 2

Lackawanna Trail swept the second and third foursomes to win its Lackawanna League Division 2 opener at Rock Creek Monday in Joel Neitz’s regular-season debut as head coach.

J.P. Gilroy locked up his singles match in the least possible time by winning the first five holes. He combined with Richie Cocchini to win better-ball one hole later. Both the better-ball match and Cocchini’s singles win were decided by 4 and 3 scores.

Jeffrey Gallagher won at singles and combined with Andrew Kaczmierczak, who had received a forfeit, to win in better ball.

Abington Heights opened its Lackawanna League Division 1 title defense Monday with a sweep of West Scranton at Pine Hills.

Will Brown shot a 1-under-par, 35 and teamed with Michael Marion for a 3-under, better-ball score while winning their matches.
