Abington Heights needed key places from each of its five scoring runners Oct. 8 to get past Scranton, 26-30, at Valley View in a meeting of the last two unbeaten teams in Lackawanna League girls cross country.

There were six teams involved in the cluster meet, but the two title contenders accounted for eight of the top 10 finishers, led by Scranton’s Bella Noreika, who ran the 3.1-mile course in 19:22.

Abby Marion, Gianna Sabatini and Maia Arcangelo all broke 20 minutes while taking second, third and fourth for Abington Heights.

In the dual-meet scoring, Scranton took the next three places against Abington Heights to maintain its chance of pulling out a win.

Allison Dammer from Abington Heights, who was 10th overall, broke up the Scranton group.

When Kristin Lipkus arrived at the finish line in 14th place, it clinched the win and sole possession of first place for the Lady Comets going into the final meet of the season.

Abington Heights also defeated Mid Valley, 16-46, and West Scranton, 15-50.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Lackawanna Trail 0-2

Lackawanna Trail’s Tori James finished third in a six-team meet at Lakeland with a time of 20:55, but the Lady Lions lost to Delaware Valley, 29-39, and Wallenpaupack, 25-38.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Abington Heights 1-2

Gavin Ross finished fourth in the six-team meet Oct. 8 at Valley View to lead Abington Heights.

The Comets defeated West Scranton, 15-48, but lost to Scranton 26-29, and Mid Valley, 24-31.

Lackawanna Trail 0-2

Lackawanna Trail fell to Delaware Valley, 15-50, and Wallenpaupack, 17-42, Oct. 8 in a meet at Lakeland.

Michael Measley was the top finisher for the Lions, coming in 17th in the six-team meet.

Berwick 1

Lackawanna Trail edged visiting Berwick Monday to remain in the hunt for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 title going into a scheduled Tuesday showdown with first-place Northwest.

The Lady Lions reached 10-2 in the WVC and 12-4 overall.

Abington Heights 2

Wallenpaupack 0

Makenna Thorpe made 11 saves in her shutout Saturday when Abington Heights extended its unbeaten streak to three games by turning back visiting Wallenpaupack in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 game.

Ellie Smith scored midway through the first half, then assisted Julianna Crandall’s goal 2:31 later.

Wallenpaupack led 13-5 in shots and 16-4 in penalty corners.

The Lady Comets are 3-7-1 in the WVC and 4-10-1 overall.

Berwick 0

Belle Coleman scored twice in the first half Saturday at Berwick to lead Lackawanna Trail to the first of two straight wins over the Lady Bulldogs.

Lilly Rejrat made seven saves in the seventh shutout of the season for the Lady Lions.

Honesdale 3

Honesdale scored twice in the last 9:46 in regulation to pull out a tie in the WVC Division 1 game on Senior Day at Abington Heights Thursday.

Caroline Kelly gave Abington Heights the lead on an assist from Claudia Kozar.

Honesdale tied the game at halftime before Shaelyn Kobrynich scored goals 3:15 part for a 3-1 lead with 20:48 left.

Kozar picked up her second assist on Kobrynich’s first goal.

Lackawanna Trail 3

Hanover Area 0

Lilly Rejrat made five saves as Lackawanna Trail posted the road shutout Oct. 9 in a WVC Division 2 game.

Abby Fahey, Maggie Martin and Cat Litwin scored. Jordan Spencer had two assists.

Abington Heights 3

Dallas 0

Makenna Thorpe made 13 saves and Claudia Kosar assisted on all three goals as Abington Heights shut out host Dallas in the Oct. 8 WVC Division 1 game.

All of the scoring came in the final 16 minutes. Jaclyn Kobrynich, Shaelyn Kobrynich and Meghan VanWert had the goals.

Valley View 2

Abington Heights 1

Valley View scored goals less than a minute apart in the first half on the way to handing visiting Abington Heights its first loss of the season in Friday’s Lackawanna League Division 1 game.

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead just 12:40 into the game.

Lauren Lefchak scored before the midway point in the first half, but Ryien Carroll finished with 10 saves for Valley View, which protected the one-goal lead for more than 60 minutes.

Abington Heights finished with a 17-4 lead in shots and a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The loss dropped the Lady Comets into a first-place tie with Scranton Prep at 10-1-2 with one game remaining for each. They are 13-1-2 overall to lead the race for the top seed in the District 2 Class 3A tournament.

Morghan Stiles scored twice and Abington Heights got goals from seven other players Oct. 8 in the Lackawanna Division 1 rout of visiting North Pocono.

The Lady Comets led 37-4 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks.

Stiles also had an assist.

Riley Mulherin and Anna Marchetta each had a goal and an assist.

Honesdale defeated visiting Abington Heights Monday in the Lackawanna Division 1 game.

The Comets fell to 5-8 in the league and 6-11-1 overall.

Abington Heights edged Valley View Oct. 9 in a key game in the District 2 Class 3A playoff race.

With the help of the win, the Comets hold a slim lead over the Cougars for the eighth and final berth in the Class 3A playoffs.

Abington Heights swept visiting Montrose in Thursday’s Lackawanna League match to improve to 10-5 and clinch a berth in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional tournament.

Ashtyn Mecca had 11 kills, 10 digs and two aces Thursday when Lackawanna Trail continued its late-season surge with a 25-14, 27-29, 25-12, 25-9 victory over visiting Elk Lake.

The Lady Lions, who opened the season with eight straight losses, have won three out of four to improve to 4-11.

Abby Wilson had 25 assists, 13 service points and five digs. Monica Stuenzi added seven kills, seven points and six digs.

Dunmore defeated visiting Abington Heights in four sets in the Oct. 8 Lackawanna match.
