MOOSIC – Clarks Summit Council members went out to the ball game at PNC Field on Sunday, July 23.
They took part in a program that the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders began this year called Town Spotlight. The team’s marketing program allows a borough to choose a day to promote themselves during a game.
On November 2022, it was arranged for Sunday, July 23 as Recognition Day for Clarks Summit Borough. On that day, group sales executives provided discounted tickets for Clarks Summit residents. They also provided tables for the council members to hand out items to the game’s attendees.
Council members gave out souvenir bags that were written “Something fun just for you” on them. These bags contained a Clarks Summit keychain, lip gloss, candy canes and mints.
As part of the Town Spotlight, the RailRiders allow town dignitaries to throw the first pitch before the game. Council president Gerrie Carey and Mayor Harry Kelly were both given the honor to do that this year. Gerrie’s son Rick Carey, who also attended the game, had been coaching his mother on pitching including how to stand and how to throw the ball. Gerrie wore a RailRiders shirt, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of PNC Field, and a baseball glove. They were both provided by Emergency Management Agency director Artie Frank.
“I thought it was a real honor for Harry and I both to be able to be there to throw the first pitch,” said Gerrie.
It was such a nice sense of cooperation on the RailRiders’ part to recognize our borough,” said Harry.
The borough gives special thanks to group sales executive Anthony D’Andrea for accommodating Clarks Summit Council including providing a wheelchair for Harry for him to go to the baseball diamond.
Many other council members and their family members, including Judge Paul Keeler, his parents, and his wife and children, also came to enjoy the game. They sat together in the third base line.
“The weather was really nice, and it was a good game,” said Councilman Bob Sheils, who saw it with his wife and children as well. “I think it was a success. It is a nice way to get the community together and let people know more about Clarks Summit.”
Council hopes to do it again next year.
