Summer has always been a special time at the Waverly Community House.

With the end of school comes the start of seven weeks of Comm Camp, a program that offers children in the region an opportunity to experience new things while forming new and lasting friendships. Campers are grouped by age and activities are planned according to the theme for that week. Friday trips to Lackawanna State Park (Levels 2 through 4) and field trips are part of the curriculum.

Tennis lessons and clinics, for beginning and intermediate players, are available and the pickleball and tennis courts are open to the public through September. Players wishing to reserve court time are asked to call The Comm office at 570-586-8191.

Summer is also a time for art exhibits and car shows. The work of local artist Renée Emanuel is on display in the Waverly Small Works Gallery. Her show, titled, “In Praise of the Ordinary,” will be exhibited through July 18.

The next exhibit in the Small Works Gallery will feature artist Earl Lehman. The opening reception for that show will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and is free to the public.

On June 22, The Comm held its first summer Cars & Coffee event. Despite the threat of severe weather that day, the show was well attended by car enthusiasts of all ages. The next Cars & Coffee is sponsored by Bailey’s Café & Events, Kost Tire and The Jewelry Room and will take place on August 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

On July 17, the band East Coast will entertain families with live music on the back lawn from 6 to 8 p.m. The concert is free to the public and attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments. Perez Design Build Remodel is sponsoring the concert.

The Second Annual Waverly Wine Fest will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9 from noon to 4 p.m. This signature summer event will feature food from Wicked Pissah Lobster Company, Greenley’s Barbecue, Pizza Plant and Evil Sweets by Lulu. Wineries and breweries include Capra Collina Winery, Grovedale Winery, Lucchi Family Wine Cellars, Maiolatesi Wine Cellars, Nimble Hill Vineyard & Winery, Deep Roots Hard Cider, Silverback Distillery and Susquehanna Brewing Company. Bohemian Cat Designs, Pure Suds, SM Hairbows & More, Linx Permanent Jewelry and Jeff Jordan Woodworking will be amongst the vendors selling merchandise at the event. Live music is provided by The Doug Smith Band.

This year’s Wine Fest is sponsored by Classic Properties, ServiceMaster by Griffing and the Waverly General Store.

Admission is $10 per person. Must be 21 or older to attend.

The Upstairs Thrift Shop will be open during the summer months. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
