Kyle Beavers from Ten Mile Mushrooms will present a cooking and information class on mushrooms on Sunday, July 21 at 4 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 304 S. State St., Clarks summit. Beavers will begin the class with a cooking demonstration of lions mane crab cakes, followed by an information session of cultivation techniques and low tech farming practices.He will narrate a walk through of the mushroom process from a single cell to a full mushroom. Beaver’s mushroom farm is located in Bloomsburg and this seminar will include bioremediation, everyday uses of fungi and other interesting fungal nodes. Democracy vs. Authoritarianism: What will Survive? — Hal Baillie, PhD. will discuss the political complexities of the 21st century on Wednesday, July 24 at noon at The Gathering Place, 304 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Cost is $5. Info or registration at www.gatheringplacecs.org.

Climate change is affecting land, air and water. The oceans and the Alaskan tundra are environments that reveal the most drastic effects of pollution and warming. On Wednesday, July 24 at noon, biologists, Janice Voltzow, Ph.D. and Ned Fetcher, Ph.D., will discuss their research on these two habitats at The Gathering Place for Community, Arts & Education, 304 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Voltzow is researching the increasing levels of carbon dioxide and its effects on ocean environments. The goal of her research is to understand the effects on coral reefs and marine animals. Dr. Fetcher has been researching climate change since 1984 with a focus on the Alaskan tundra, the changes in vegetation and air in controlled areas. Voltzow and Fetcher will use a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate the changes, as well as interactive activities. $5 donation to attend. CHILDREN’S & TEENS’ EVENTS

Bring your kids and grandkids to the Catlin House on Saturday, July 27 for Children’s Day. This special open house and porch party for kids will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the society’s headquarters, the Catlin House, 232 Monroe Ave., Scranton. Learn about what the region was like thousands of years ago with items from an archaeological dig, play old-fashioned games, help paint a giant mural, and make crafts to take home. Brookvalley Farms will offer pony rides as well. This annual program is part of the Lackawanna County Library System’s Summer Reading Program, and is free and open to all ages. OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Clarks Green United Methodist Church, 119 Glenburn Road, will hold its annual Vacation Bible School from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday, July 22 to Friday, July 26. The theme this year is “Rollin’ River Rampage” and will include Bible stories, crafts, songs, snacks, games and more. All children ages pre-school through fifth grade are invited to join the fun.
