The ability to navigate close games has helped propel the Abington Heights boys soccer team into the middle of tight races for a division title and top playoff seedings.
Abington Heights fought past North Pocono, 2-1, in double overtime Sept. 30 to trim the list of teams tied for first place in Lackawanna League Division 1 from three to two.
The Comets knocked the Trojans out of the tie and entered October even with Scranton Prep at 8-1 in divisional play.
Abington Heights has played five straight games that were decided by one or two goals. The Comets are 6-2 in such games on the season.
After starting 1-2, the Comets have won nine of 10 with five shutouts.
One of the victories in that stretch was 3-1 over Scranton Prep Sept. 12. The teams meet again at Scranton Prep Oct. 7.
The Cavaliers bounced back from the loss to the Comets. They are on a six-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 26-4 in the process. They beat North Pocono, 3-2, and won the other games in the streak by at least three goals each.
Scranton Prep is 11-1 to lead a 13-team race for eight spots in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.
Abington Heights is 10-3 overall and bypassed North Pocono into second in the nine-team race for eight spots in District 2 Class 3A.
