The Dietrich galleries were bursting with trick-or-treaters of all ages, going from table to table to find out about support resources for children and families in our area. Not only was HANDS of Wyoming County here — at least 12 other agencies and organizations were here with information and treats for all. A wonderful combination of fun and a chance to learn about how many resources are here to help parents, kids, caregivers, and grandparents.
Thank you to HANDS of Wyoming County and all who made the day so festive and informational, including Children’s Resource Center/Robinson’s Counseling Center, Wyoming County Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, Tunkhannock Public Library, Head Start/Early Head Start, Trehab Community Resource Center, Early Intervention, Community Awareness Group, the Girl Scouts, Boy Scout Troup 518, Wyoming County 4-H Extension, and the Early Learning Resource Center.
Another exciting event was the Leonardo da Vinci Sneak Preview with our friends at WVIA. Only nine had reserved seats by the Thursday before the event, but over 50 showed up for a chance to see excerpts from the new Ken Burns 4-hour documentary, to be featured on WVIA-TV on November 18 and 19. This is the first Ken Burns documentary that is not about American history. But Chris Norton of WVIA told us that it does have an American connection. In Allentown, Pennsylvania there is a Da Vinci Science Center. It is an interactive experience to understand the workings of your body, the ocean, and so much more. You can find out more about this amazing opportunity by searching for Da Vinci Science Center. We learned all about it from a wonderful WVIA Short Takes documentary. Thank you, Chris Norton and all our friends at WVIA for not only bringing us highlights of the Leonardo da Vinci series, but also connecting it to a valuable resource not so many miles away. And, Chris, you also make these sneak previews fun, this time with your trivia/bookmark game. Everyone loved it!
A special November event coming up is the Dietrich Film Favorite of the month, presented by our Veterans Connecting Meetup and Workshop and sponsored by Coterra Energy. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Film Favorites are always free and this time our sponsor is also providing free small popcorn and small soda. The movie is Dog, starring Channing Tatum, the story of two former Army Rangers, who against their will find themselves paired to race to their fellow soldier’s funeral on time. Will they make it on time? Thank you, Coterra Energy for helping us celebrate our veterans by bringing this film to the big screen at the Dietrich.
We are also so pleased to announce the return of the Valenches Music Co. String Quartet Concert on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. It is free and sponsored in memory of Joan Daniels, local cellist and longtime friend of the Dietrich. All of us who attended their previous concert at the Dietrich highly recommend that you experience some of this concert featuring Gabriel Schaff, Violin 1; Leah Valenches, Violin 2; Juliet Valenches, Viola; and and Peter Brubaker, Cellist. This is an opportunity to bring young ones who are prepared to sit and listen quietly to truly remarkable musicians playing music of three centuries.
A reminder, too, that you are invited to another free movie event, sponsored by CARES on Thursday, November 7 at 6 p.m. Clean and Sober, starring Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman, about the struggle of substance use disorder, a 1988 film that is so relevant today. Small popcorn and small soda are free, thanks to our friends a CARES of Wyoming County. For information or to reserve seats for this event or any other Dietrich event call 570-836-1022 x3.
