WAVERLY TWP. — The Board of Trustees of the Waverly Community House, 1115 N. Abington Road, announced the Comm’s latest art exhibit — “Small Works” by sculptor Charles Welles and painter James Penedos.
Charles Welles is a fourth-generation native of Waverly Township. He is a sculptor who primarily carves marble. He has been carving for approximately 40 years. His work includes figurative, abstract and conceptual work.
His studio is in Bardwell, Wyoming County — between Tunkhannock and Factoryville.
Welles (also known as Ty) has been affiliated with and is a past president of Artists for Art, which operates the AFA Gallery in Scranton, since its founding in 1989. He was a founder and past president of the Lucan Center for the Arts in Scranton. He was also a member of the Endless Mountains Council of the Arts (EMCA) based in Tunkhannock. He is a practicing lawyer in Scranton and has been active with other community and arts organizations.
James Penedos was born in Caminha, Portugal, on the northern coast where his father ran the village café. Self-taught, James started by studying the works and writing of great painters, doing many reproductions to learn the masters’ techniques. He has exhibited in galleries in New York City and Paris, as well as in Colorado, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Welles and James are partners in the Springville Schoolhouse Art Studios, a former schoolhouse in Springville, which they developed into live/work studios for artists.
“Small Works” will be on display in the Waverly Small Works Gallery in the South Wing of The Comm from Sept. 13 through Oct. 25, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Gallery is a project of The F. Lammot Belin Arts Foundation, which has a mission to promote art appreciation in the community and to encourage and hearten the human spirit through art. For information on the Foundation, visit www.waverlycommarts.org.
