Abington Heights sophomore Ryan Horutz finished 16th in the Class 3A diving at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming Championships March 15, the final day of the four-day event at Bucknell University.
The top eight in each event earned medals and the top 16 scored points.
Horutz finished with a score of 372.85.
Mika White, another Comets sophomore, was 20th out of 23 participants.
There were 32 entries in each swimming event.
Jason Casper finished 22nd in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.61 and 27th in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.13.
Derek Williams was also 27th. He did the 50 freestyle in 21.84.
Abington Heights was one of 55 Class 3A boys teams to score at the meet.
Class 2A boys
Scranton Prep’s Lukas Iannone earned a bronze medal in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 1:54.38.
Iannone reached the final by placing fourth in qualifying, then finished 1.26 seconds faster in the final to move up one position.
Ben Kessler missed the finals by one place, then repeated his qualifying performance to finish ninth in the 200 freestyle in 1:46.44.
Iannone was 12th in the 100 breaststroke and Kessler was 13th in the 100 backstroke. They joined Michael DeVitto and Ryan Walsh as part of the 19th-place 200 medley relay and 25th in the 200 freestyle relay.
Scranton Prep placed 16th in the state with 34 points.
Mount Pleasant edged Indiana 198-197 for the title. Tunkhannock was the only District 2 team to place ahead of Scranton Prep, taking fifth with 117 points.
Class 2A girls
Rebecca Oakes and Eva Kashuba from Scranton Prep each earned medals.
Oakes took seventh in the 100 butterfly in 59.02 and also scored in the 100 freestyle by taking 10th in 54.00.
Kaszuba was eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.93.
The Classics had a second entry in each of those two events.
Ella Schofield was 28th in the breaststroke and Sophia Galko was 29th in the butterfly.
Scranton Prep also scored in two relays.
Galko, Kaszuba, Oakes and Schofield were 10th in the 200 medley then Galko, Marin Purcell, Schofield and Oakes were 12th in the 200 freestyle.
Scranton Prep was 15th out of 57 teams that scored in the state meet. The Classics had 54 points.
Mount Pleasant won with 189 points. Erie Cathedral Prep was second with 173 and District 2 member Dallas was third with 146 points with the help of a relay victory.
Class 3A girls
Abington Heights qualified a relay team and individual to compete at Bucknell, but both finished last there.
Kacey Johnson, Ella Bannon, Audra Wimmer and Gianna Vacchino were in the 400 freestyle relay while Vacchino participated in the 100 freestyle.
