Lackawanna Trail was the only Lackawanna League Division 3 boys basketball team to be able to take down champion Elk Lake for the second straight season, but the inability to get past second-place Susquehanna eventually ended the season for the Lions.
Elk Lake went 13-1 each of the past two seasons to win the division. Each time, the only loss came against Lackawanna Trail. The Lions finished 10-4 in the division, two games behind second-place Susquehanna.
The Sabers swept three games from the Lions this season, winning the home-and-home league matchups and then knocking out Lackawanna Trail in the District 2 Class 2A semifinals with a trip to the Mohegan Arena and a berth in the state playoffs on the line.
Lackawanna Trail’s Feb. 5 victory over Elk Lake came in dominant fashion.
The Lions blew out to leads of 23-6 after one quarter and 41-14 at halftime of a 61-40 victory over the visiting Warriors.
Ashton Thiel, Hayden Bluhm, and Jimmy Phillips all scored 15 points in the win while Logan Seigle added 10.
Thiel hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter, but otherwise the win was about balance. All five starters had at least three points in the first quarter and at least five by halftime.
The victory over Elk Lake was sandwiched between road losses at Susquehanna (57-46) and Montrose (45-39).
Lackawanna Trail then closed out the regular season with a 64-27 of visiting Forest City.
The Lions again displayed balance with Phillips scoring 13 points to lead four players in double figures. Seigle had 11 while Thiel and Lucas Filipek scored 10 each.
Lackawanna Trail opened the seven-team District 2 Class 2A tournament as the third seed, earning a home game in which it defeated Mountain View, 66-53.
The Lions lost 61-40 at Susquehanna Feb. 21 to finish the season at 16-7.
Lackawanna Trail held Mountain View to three first-quarter points and led 34-17 at halftime.
Seigle led the Lions with 20 points.
Phillips added 17. Filipek made three first-half 3-pointers on the way to 11 points.
Mountain View was led by Hudson Bain with 20 points.
Mason Keyes led Susquehanna into the final with 21 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Lackawanna Trail.
The Sabers outscored the Lions in every quarter to gradually pull away.
Seigle led Lackawanna Trail with 14 points, all in the middle two quarters. Phillips had 10.
Girls
The Lackawanna Trail girls lost their final four games to finish 3-20.
Ella Stambaugh scored 40 points to lead top-seeded Wyoming Seminary to a 57-14 rout of the Lady Lions Feb. 17 in the District 2 Class 2A quarterfinals.
Lackawanna Trail tied for sixth in the eight-team Lackawanna Division 3 with a 3-11 record. They caught Susquehanna, the team they beat in their final victory 47-45 at home Feb. 3.
